As a therapist, I have worked with many individuals who struggle with phobias. Phobias can feel overwhelming, limiting how we live, work, and connect with others. Whether it’s a fear of flying, public speaking, spiders, or social situations, these responses often live deep in the subconscious mind. Over the years, I have found hypnosis to be one of the most effective ways to help people overcome these fears and regain a sense of calm and control.

How I Use Hypnosis to Help with Phobias

Hypnosis is not just a single technique but a structured and often individualized process. In my practice, I start with detailed interviewing and removal of myths surrounding hypnosis. I then move to suggestibility testing, which helps introduce the mind to trance. From there, we continue with specific trance induction, followed by deepening techniques.

Once in this state, the subconscious mind is open to carefully chosen suggestions that replace fear with healthier, more confident responses. Afterward, I gradually guide the client out of trance and often include a testing phase to evaluate the effectiveness of the work. This structured approach ensures that hypnosis is safe, reliable, and tailored to each individual. As part of treatment, I find that coaching the client in auto-hypnosis (self-hypnosis) is an essential part of therapy.

One of the things I love about hypnosis is that it works for all ages. Children, teens, and adults alike can benefit from the process. It is always fascinating to observe how a person changes through the process, becoming stronger and gaining deeper insight.

Ericksonian Hypnosis and Direct Hypnosis

In my work, I often use both Ericksonian hypnosis and direct hypnosis. Ericksonian methods rely on metaphors, stories, and indirect suggestions to engage the imagination and allow the subconscious to discover its own solutions. Direct hypnosis, by contrast, uses clear, straightforward suggestions like “you feel calm as you step inside an airplane.” Both approaches are valuable. Some clients respond better to direct suggestions, while others need the subtlety of Ericksonian techniques. That’s why I use an integrated approach, combining both styles to achieve the best outcome for each client.

Group Hypnosis vs. Individual Hypnosis

Hypnosis can be very effective in small group settings, especially when addressing common fears such as test anxiety or public speaking. Being in a group often provides reassurance and helps normalize the experience of fear. That said, when phobias are linked to other conditions, such as trauma, panic disorders, or medical concerns, an individualized approach becomes essential. An in-person setting allows me to tailor the process, identify specific triggers, and create a plan designed just for that individual.
